Premiere screening of “Where the Sidewalk Begins: The University and the Global City”

Thank you to all of you who joined The Collaborative Urban Research Laboratory for a specialĀ  screening of “Where the SideWalk Begins: The University and the Global City” as part of the York 50 celebrations.

The evening began with an introduction by Peer Zumbansen, director of CURL, who gave an overview of the Lab’s mandate and the evolution of this film project through CURL’s unique collaborative approach.

We were honored to have special guest Mark Osbaldeston (author of “Unbuilt Toronto: A History of the City that Could Have Been”) enlighten us with a brief talk about the inception of York in the context of Toronto’s expansion 50 years ago. Stan Shapson (Vice President Research & Innovation, York University) followed this up with a some insight into the evolution of York over the past 50 years.

In addition to our film, we were pleased to present a collaborative project by a group of students from the graduate film studies program at York. The short film “Ephemeral City” was an adaptation of an excerpt from Italo Calvino’s book “Invisible Cities”.

Overall the night was a great success and served as a great introduction into what is to come in the near future from the Collaborative Urban Research Laboratory.
